Electronic spreadsheet programs were originally based on paper spreadsheets used for accounting. As such, the basic layout of computerized spreadsheets is the same as the paper ones. Related data is stored in tables — which are a collection of small rectangular boxes or cells organized into rows and columns.

All versions of Excel and other spreadsheet programs can store several spreadsheet pages in a single computer file. The saved computer file is often referred to as a workbook and each page in the workbook is a separate worksheet.

Microsoft Word is an element of Microsoft Office which helps with the creation, editing, and formatting of documents. It includes facilities for spell and grammar checking, as well as text formatting. You can also include photos, tables, and charts in your documents. It's popular for letters, reports, and resumes.

Word allows many people to work on a document together, keeping track of changes. It provides templates to make document creation easier. It is commonly utilised by users, organisations, and schools because of its ease of use and multiple useful features. For more visually-driven storytelling, Microsoft Sway can serve as a complementary tool to Word for creating dynamic, multimedia presentations.

OneNote is a digital note taking app. It allows you to use the notebook in any way you would use a "paper" notebook. Whether you are taking meeting notes, keeping track of to-do lists, researching something, tracking project progress, sketching ideas or anything else - OneNote can be your tool.

PowerPoint is a presentation program developed by Microsoft. It is included in the standard Office suite along with Microsoft Word and Excel. The software allows users to create anything from basic slide shows to complex presentations.

PowerPoint is often used to create business presentations, but can also be used for educational or informal purposes. The presentations are comprised of slides, which may contain text, images, and other media, such as audio clips and movies. Sound effects and animated transitions can also be included to add extra appeal to the presentation. However, overusing sound effects and transitions will probably do more to annoy your audience than draw their attention. (Yes, we have all heard the car screeching noise enough times for one lifetime.)

Microsoft Publisher is a desktop publishing application from Microsoft, differing from Microsoft Word in that the emphasis is placed on page layout and graphic design rather than text composition and proofreading. It is planned for discontinuation in October 2026.

Overview
Publisher is included in higher-end editions of Microsoft Office, reflecting Microsoft's emphasis on the application as an easy-to-use and less expensive alternative to the "heavyweights" with a focus on the small-business market, where firms do not have dedicated design professionals available to make marketing materials and other documents. However, it has a relatively small share of the desktop publishing market, which is dominated by Adobe InDesign and formerly by QuarkXPress.
